How To Quickly Repair A Leaking Refrigerator
When it comes to doing a little DIY refrigerator repair
, most people get a bit skittish. That formidable monstrosity that takes up a good portion of your kitchen floor requires the skills of a professional repair technician to repair, doesn't it? The answer in most cases is no. A fair number of the common issues that you'll have with a refrigerator can be easily repaired without the need for expensive professional help. Here are just a few of the problems you might run into which you can correct yourself:
Water from the Side: Condensation Leaks by the Door
This is perhaps the most common refrigerator repair issue there is and the one that is the easiest to fix. Your refrigerator door has a gasket that runs along the side of it where it meets the main body of the appliance. If that gasket doesn't sit flush when the door closes, condensation will build up and your refrigerator will leak. There are only three possible reasons for this:
* The gasket is cracked or worn out
* The door is not mounted correctly
* Food is caked on the gasket
A refrigerator repair technician is not needed for any of these problems. If the gasket needs to be replaced, you can buy a new one at your local hardware store or online at an appliance repair site. If the door isn't mounted properly, it's probably just a loose bolt. Tighten it or replace it. In some cases, you might also want to adjust the legs so the door isn't leaning in any particular direction when you open and close it. If food is caked on the gasket and it's not closing properly because of it, it is time for you to clean the kitchen. Start with the gasket. Soap and warm water should do the trick.
Water From Underneath: Drain Pans and Defrost Drains
Underneath every refrigerator is a catch basin called a drain pan and inside every refrigerator is a device called a defrost drain which is used to drain water when you defrost your refrigerator. If you see water leaking from underneath, you have a problem with one or the other. A cracked drain pan, which is easily replaced, can create a large puddle on the floor. A clogged defrost drain creates a puddle in the refrigerator. Two very simple steps to take if you see water under or in your refrigerator is to check the drain pan and clear the defrost drain of any built up food that might be clogging it. If neither is the problem, then you might want to call a technician.
Water from the Back: A Leaky Ice Maker
If water is leaking from the back of your refrigerator, it is more often than not because the water delivery system to your ice maker is in some way impeded or the line is broken. Turn off the water source and remove the feeding tube for inspection. If it leaks, replace it. That should solve the problem. If it doesn't, check the fitting when you put it back on to make sure it's tight. If the icemaker still leaks after that's done, you may need to replace it. If you don't have experience with refrigerator repair, it is recommended that you call in a professional for that task.
