How To Re-plumb A Washing Machine

If you find that your washing machine has broken down and is beyond fixing

, you may need to purchase a new one. But how do you go about swapping the old device for the new one? Your initial reaction may be to call out Northern Virginia plumbers to take a look, and this is a good idea if you do not have any DIY experience.

However, if you know a little bit about plumbing and you like to fix things yourself, you may not need to rely on Northern Virginia plumbers to change your washing machine for you. But if so, just be careful that you know what you are doing because you may cause damage to the washing machine. Here are some directions.

1. Remove the Old Washing Machine

The first stage is to remove the old washing machine from its position. First, take out anything that remains inside the drum. Then look at the back and find out whether it has a hot and cold feed which will normally be colored red and blue respectively or just a cold feed.

Find the isolating valve for the cold supply to the washing machine and turn it off. Then locate the flexible hose that goes into the waste pipe and pull this out as well. Finally, locate the electric wire that provides the power and turn it off.

2. Prepare the New Washing Machine

You will need to remove the packaging from new washing machine, but be careful when you do this. Sometimes the polystyrene packaging actually goes inside the washing machine, so remove the packaging very carefully to avoid causing any damage. Then take off the carriage bolts, which you will find at the back of the machine. These are different with every manufacturer, so make sure you read the instructions if you are not sure how to remove them. You may need to use a wrench to unscrew them, and then you usually have to remove the plug entirely.

3. Connect the New Device

If you are not comfortable fitting your new device and dont want to cause any damage, it is probably a good idea to choose a plumber from one of the many Northern Virginia plumbers available to sort this part out for you. However, if you want to go ahead and connect your device, find the hose for the cold water supply and screw this onto the same pipe that the old water supply was connected to. You may want to use some grips to tighten it. Then feed the waste tube pipe into the waste pipe and connect the electrics again.

4. Try It Out

Before you turn the washing machine on, make sure that it is stabilized so that it does not rock when it is in use. When you are happy that it is properly stabilized, put it on for a cycle to clean it out. If it all seems to be in order then you will have finished the job. Congratulations!
