. Coorg is located amongst the Western Ghats at an altitude of 1525 m above sea level. Also called Kodagu, Coorg is well known for its coffee plantations. The beautiful exotic scenery with flora and fauna in Coorg is eye catching. The serene atmosphere, abundant flora and fauna and the moderate climate attract the tourists from all over India. Coorg has earned the nickname of the Scotland of India in terms of its amazing beauty.
Kodagu name is derived from Kodaimalenadu which means dense forest on steep hill. Kodagu district consists of different communities like Kodava, Tulu, Gowda and Moplah. The main community which is strong economically and politically is Kodava. The economy depends on agriculture, coffee plantations, forestry and tourism. Other than coffee, Coorg cultivates Rubber, Black pepper, Cardamom and Vanilla. The Coorg district has three wild life sanctuaries such as Brahmagiri, Puspagiri and Thalakaveri Wild Life Sanctuaries. Elephant, tiger, leopard, deer and boar can be found in these sanctuaries.

Coorg does not have any airport or railway station. Mysore is the nearest railway station to Coorg which connects to Bangalore. It takes around 4 hours to reach Mysore. From Mysore one can take taxi to reach Coorg.
The best way to reach Coorg from Bangalore is by bus or by car. The distance from Bangalore to Coorg is 252 km by road. If you can drive by your own vehicle it takes around 5 hours and 20 minutes to reach Coorg. Volvo buses with AC or non AC buses and Karnataka State Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses are available and they take around 4 hours from Bangalore to Coorg. KSRTC bus stand is situated in the city of Coorg.
Cabs charge starts from Rs. 4700/- for economy vehicleand for high end vehicle it takes around Rs. 6300/- to cover the distance.
