How To Receive A Kind Word And Why You Need To Do This For Others
If you have ever been complimented and did not know how to respond correctly
, you are not alone. Studies show that many people from all walks of life do not know the correct way to accept a compliment.
Many of us feel embarrassed by compliments. Perhaps you may also feel unworthy of praise. Here is a thought for you to consider; giving a compliment is a two way street.
Simply put, the person who takes the time to give you a compliment should be acknowledged. To do otherwise is often mistaken for rudeness.
Usually the person who can not accept a compliment with grace simply does not know the rules in this social exchange. The good news is that it is easy to learn how to accept a compliment.
General Sources of Compliments
Social. You are attending an event and someone says they like an article of clothing you are wearing or your hair style.
Business. A co-worker or supervisor congratulates you on a job well done or a particular award or promotion you have received.
Stranger. Someone you have never met before compliments you in some way.
Significant other. Your significant other compliments you in a more personal area than would be found elsewhere.
Breaking It Down
Social. Look the person complimenting you in the eyes, smile and say "thank you!" Do not feel like you have to gush over this person but do try to find something to compliment them in return, "I like your scarf "or "what a nice tie" will do.
Business. Do look the person in the eye and smile while saying thank you but be aware that you may also want to insert a comment like; "it was a team effort" or "I am glad you liked my work". Be professional but cordial.
Stranger. Of course you will want to be cautious with strangers but if a stranger has offered a polite compliment simply say thank you and move on.
Significant other. This is the person you are most intimate with and you will have the freedom to be more affectionate in your response. Be sure to give them you immediate and full attention, thank them for the compliment and add a kiss for good measure.
Despite now knowing how to take a compliment and what to do in return you may still have some nervous feelings. That is ok, in time you will become more gracious and accepting and your self esteem will increase.
In each situation the way you accept a compliment is a little different but the reason to be gracious is not. Another human being has taken the time to offer you the opportunity to receive positive feelings. Being so self conscious that you fail to accept this diminishes them and you.
