How To Receive Unemployment Compensation

In order to collect unemployment, a person first needs to contact the state's unemployment office

. People can then file for unemployment online or in person at the unemployment office. Before filing for unemployment, people must first gather several pieces of information, including data on previous employers, official salary, and the reason for dismissal. This information will have to be submitted when filing, as will other personal information.

After filing, people must then schedule an interview with a representative of the state's unemployment office. In the interview, representatives can help people determine if they qualify for unemployment compensation. For instance, those who quit, are too sick to work, or were fired for something they did wrong may not qualify for unemployment compensation. Neither will those who only worked part time or were considered seasonal workers.

In many cases, simply filing is all it takes to collect unemployment; however, some people are denied compensation, and they must then deal with unemployment appeals and take more steps to receive compensation. In most states people have to appeal the denial within 14 days. And in these situations, people usually have to provide a list of people who can verify the facts about their dismissal.

When handling an appeal, people must work with unemployment specialists and give them extra, precise information about people who can verify the facts of the situation as well as more detailed information concerning the job and the employer. All of this information should be recorded in writing so that it can be used as part of a legal case. And of course, any physical documents (such as e-mails) that contain pertinent evidence should also be included.

The state unemployment office should be able to provide the address where the appeal should be sent, and they will also call and interview witnesses and employers before making any kind of decision on the appeal. And while waiting for a decision on the appeal, a person should continue to file for unemployment payments so that he or she meets all requirements. If the unemployment office refuses the appeal, a person can either accept the decision or file for a rehearing and challenge the appeal.

In most cases, claiming unemployment is a simple process. All it takes is talking to someone at the unemployment office and filling out the necessary paperwork. But if a claim is denied, people can then appeal the decision, which takes more time and effort; however, the extra effort can result in receiving the desired compensation.
