How To Reduce Old Stretch Marks by:Juana Cruz
Old stretch marks are the most frustrating to cure among all kinds of marks that exist
. The newer ones - red or deep purple are quite easier to handle and have greater chances of making less noticeable. However, old scars - the ones that are silvery white - are hard to treat because they already have blended with the skin for years.
But it does not mean that there is no way to make them less evident, however. With the right application, you just might be able to see the old scars fade completely.
Stretch marks arise when the skin fibers are pulled or stretched to their fullest extent to accomodate the hormonal changes that occur in the body. When the fibers are stretched and are not elastic enough, scars appear - the deep purple kind all over the area. This means that sudden growth of the body, weight gain and pregnancy are among the causes behind these scars.
Over time, when these scars are left untreated or are not reduced, these lines become white and blend with the skin in a way. But that does not make them less noticeable. Old stretch marks are still seen and evident on the affected body area - however, as years pass, they are less unsightly as the newer ones, and are easier to hide.
But they are still embarrassing nonetheless. Fortunately, if you have old stretch marks, you can reduce their visibility by the use of either topical applications or surgical procedures.
Topical applications usually come in the form of stretch mark creams and lotions. Commonly, these products aim to make the old scars less evident by making them blend with the healthy skin evenly. If you want to go for this option, there are a few things to remember before buying a stretch mark product from drugstores.
First off, you should be sure of the ingredients used. Vitamins E and K are commonly found in stretch mark lotions because they promote skin repair from scars and injuries and general skin health. Other ingredients you should check out are ginseng, which prevents collagenase - ie, the destruction of the collagen; horsetail, which is good to rejuvenates cells and contributes to the skin's firmness and elasticity; and calendula, which rejuvenates, heals and reduces cellular inflammation and soothes and softens the skin.
Needless to say that user reviews help when deciding for the right stretch mark cream for you. Reviews are everywhere - not just on the merchant website itself. Of course there are reviews on the merchant website, but all of them are positive to boost sales. What you need to read are both positive and negative reviews, to help you better understand what to expect when you use the product. While it is inevitable to have unhappy users for a certain product, you, however, need to know what the general verdict is to estimate its overall effectiveness on you.
On the other hand, surgical procedures also do the same thing - they make old stretch marks less noticeable by either producing more collagen on the skin or peeling off a few layers of the skin for newer ones. What turn most individuals off are their costs and the pain involved. If they'd get the same results from topical solutions, then why bother?
Old stretch marks may not be eliminated completely, since topicals and surgeries can only reduce their visibility (as of this writing).
