How To Reduce Stress Levels At Heathrow Airport
London Heathrow Airport is the United Kingdom's largest airport and one of the busiest airports in the world
. More than 67 million passengers pass through the airport every year flying to over 200 domestic, European and international destinations using over 90 different airlines. The airport was originally designed to cater for 55 million people but due to the increase in this number, the construction of Terminal 5 was approved and opened on 2008 increasing Heathrow's capacity to a massive 90 million a year.
Heathrow Airport is 12 miles from Central London and covers 4.69 square miles of land. It has 5 terminals and 2 runways, which run parallel to each other east-west. On 15th January 2009 the UK government approved plans to build a third runway at Heathrow, allowing for more air traffic to the airport.
So, Heathrow airport is a busy place, some might say overcrowded; in fact, it was voted the world's least favourite airport, alongside Chicago O'Hare, in an online survey. So what does this mean for the people using the airport? It can be a pretty stressful experience. When you're about to set off on a lovely summer holiday/business trip/ weekend away/ ski break, the last thing you want is to be flustered and stressed BUT there are things you can do to make your airport experience a calmer one... make sure you have planned ahead!
To save the early morning/late night drive to the airport, you could always book an airport hotel so that there is no need to rush before your flight. An early and good nights sleep can help to relieve the stress of an early flight, bustling crowds and security queues, which are a common occurrence at Heathrow. If an airport hotel doesn't tempt you, sometimes an airport lounge can offer a quiet and more relaxed space if you have to wait a couple of hours for a flight after checking in. Both of these options mean you have to spend less time in amongst the stressful Heathrow atmosphere and provide a more relaxing start to your holiday.
Finally, remember to book your airport parking in advance! It's so easy to forget to do because it's not the most exciting task in the world but it's essential. There is nothing worse than turning up to the airport and realizing that you have forgotten to book a space, not only will you have to pay more for gate prices but there is always that momentary worry that there will be no spaces.
There are three options to choose from when booking airport parking at Heathrow, which are:
1) On-Airport Parking
There is a variety of on-airport car parks within the airport perimeter at Heathrow for really good value. This option is fairly popular because the car parks are situated close to the terminals, which makes transferring to the airport quick and easy. The Long Stay car parks which are available often cost less than Business Parking, which is the most convenient on airport choice. When booking on-airport parking it is worth booking in advance and shopping around to get the best value deals, as there are a lot of different companies offering the service today.
2) Off-Airport Parking
Off-airport sites at Heathrow offer the best value car parking and Heathrow has a number of off-airport services available. These car parks tend to be less expensive because the transfers to the airport take slightly longer because they are further away from the terminals. However, it is unlikely that the transfers will take longer than five minutes and are a regular service which makes off-airport parking the best value deal.
3) Meet and Greet Heathrow Airport Parking
This service is by far the most convenient parking that is provided at the airport. You drive your car straight to the terminal you need, where a driver will meet you and take your car and park it for you and then, when you return from your holiday, you will be met at the terminal so you don't have the hassle of finding your car. There are a few excellent meet and greet options that are provided at Heathrow which are available at all of the five terminals. It is still important to remember to book in advance online to save those pennies.
So remember when you book your beautifully relaxing holiday, don't forget to book the boring parts either! It will save you a lot of hassle and stop your holiday getting off to a stressful start!
