. We take stress in to work with us and then we are greeted with even more stress when we walk through the door. Then we repeat the process in reverse taking stress home with us from work and so it continues. A certain level of stress is acceptable as normal; submission deadlines, presentations to the board of directors, a proposal for a new project will all have a measure of stress related to the successful outcome of the cause of the stress. It is good to be aware of the warning signs of excessive stress on the job. Feelings of anxiousness, depression and irritability; a loss of interest in the job and a sense of lethargy; sleeping difficulties and fatigue; limited attention span, headaches and stomach upsets are all symptoms that your stress levels are too high. When stress is left unattended, it may lead to more serious health related problems. Further, high stress levels and lack of sleep cause people to seek solace in alcohol and drugs.
When your job is in jeopardy due to fear of layoffs or high performance expectations, no job satisfaction and a host of other factors, stress levels shoot sky high. The more recent recession and economic slowdown has not helped, it has only made things worse. As a result people are being forced to work longer hours, take pay cuts and meet unrealistic expectations. However, most of us cannot afford to lose our jobs; we have mortgages to pay off; children in school or college; medical bills and all the zillion other bills that seem to sprout like mushrooms in a field!
Thankfully man has made huge strides in finding ways to combat stress and there are several methods you can adopt to reduce and manage stress on the job.
One of the best methods of reducing stress on the job is to begin by taking care of your self. Your physical and emotional well being is very important and you have to take out the time to care for your self. I am not talking about a complete makeover or making dramatic changes to your lifestyle. Small things can increase energy, lift your mood and put you back in the driver's seat. Here are a few tips to help you get started.
Aerobic exercise is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and lower anxiety level. As you exercise you are relaxing your mind and body, elevating your mind to a different level and increasing your energy. 30 minutes each day of heart pounding exercise can do wonders to relax you and get rid of the stress.
Did you know that eating right can impact stress levels? Small meals at regular intervals help maintain the blood sugar in the body. When we have low blood sugar we become stressed, anxious and irritable. Eating in excess will lead to lethargy and obesity.
Stress can result from too much of work pressure and may cause insomnia. A lack of sleep leaves you feeling drained and the job suffers. Do your best to workout and get a good night's rest to help you cope up with stressful situations.
