How To Remain Safe On The Shooting Range

Prior to handling a gun or other type of weapon

, you need to make sure you know exactly how to handle it. Failure to do so can be extremely dangerous and you could wind up injuring or killing yourself or someone around you. Gun accidents can be easily avoided by simply educating yourself and keeping these critical safety pointers in mind.

Point the gun at your intended target and not somewhere else. Be aware that you could hurt someone if you accidentally fire or play with your weapon. Don't put your hand on the trigger until you're ready to fire. Wait for the firing command to be given before doing anything.

Only load the gun once you are ready to shoot. Until then, the weapon should remain unloaded. When you are on the firing range, load the weapon only once you are in position and the range has been completely cleared for firing. Carefully study your weapon and know how to use it properly. Ignorance is no excuse for hurting someone. Always use the recommended ammunition for your gun.

Bear in mind that you should only have one type of weapon out at a time. If you own more than one, only use one at a time and store all other firearms in their cases when not in use. Always be aware of your target and what is behind it. Also make yourself of adjacent areas. Keep the barrel free from obstructions and always clear it before firing.

Always wear proper ear and eye protection while on the range. Do not go to a firing range if you have been drinking or are under the influence of another type of drug. If you are shooting and your weapon does not fire immediately after you pull the trigger, maintain your position momentarily. Then, with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, unload the gun carefully. Never assume the guns safety mechanisms will always work without fail. Keep your balance and do not trip and accidentally fire the weapon.
