How To Remove Scratches From Designer Lenses
Inevitably at some point, most people find that they have a mysterious scratch that
has appeared in their designer lenses, and after the initial panic and shock (as most designer eyewear is not cheap) wears off, they are left wondering if there is anything they can do to keep their glasses from ending up in the recycle bin. Sometimes we get lucky and we find only a tiny scratch that does not interfere with our line of sight, and other times we immediately notice that we can no longer see clearly through one of the designer lenses. If you have this problem and are desperately seeking help, you might be able to remove those scratches with some items that you already have in your home!
First of all you need to find out if your designer lenses are made of glass or plastic. Many lenses today are made out of metal plastics, such as polycarbonate to reduce the risk of them shattering in our eyes. Also, these types of lenses weigh much less than traditional glass lenses do. Many repair options that are easy only apply to plastic lenses, so if you have glass lenses you might need to take them in to have the scratch buffed out.
Many solutions you can buy are polymer based solutions, and since plastics and polymers are both made from carbon, they bond with each other, filling in cracks and scratches. However, these do not work well with glass. If you ever find that you cannot repair a scratch or crack, instead of tossing your designer lenses away you might want to consider buying a new lens for the frames instead.
One way to remove scratches is to use toothpaste and a soft cloth. Regular old toothpaste works best. Rub it on the lens in small circles using the soft cloth. Do this for about 15 seconds, then rinse and wipe with a dry soft cloth. You can repeat the process if you still notice the scratch. If your glasses have a coating on them, they will be more difficult to treat. Another thing to try is something called jewelers rouge, which is another product that might work to remove scratches from designer lenses. Choose a rouge that is not abrasive, and mix it using two ounces of ammonia and two quarts of water. You can use a polishing cloth to apply the rouge in a circular motion. When the scratch becomes less visible, use the ammonia mixture to clean the glass using a sponge. You can try these methods all at your own risk, as improper application might cause more scratching, especially with glass or with designer lenses that have been coated for one reason or another.
