It can be hard to feel completely at comfortable in your rental when you are unable to add homey touches or make the place your own. This can be difficult for those in extended contracts or who plan to stay in a house or apartment for an extended period of time.
When it comes to renovating and redoing the look of your place, there are a number of ways that you can individualize it while also staying close to the regulations placed on your by a landlord or management company.
One restriction that many renters find has to do with painting. There are a number of places that do not want their tenants to apply any other paint colors than what has already been used.
For individuals that are hoping to change up the interior of their residence and make it more unique, this can be a problem. However, there is a number of things you can do if you find yourself in this type of predicament.
One option that can be used to change the appearance of walls is a decal. Wall decals are made of materials that temporarily stick to walls and can be removed easily when needed.
From a distance, they look like a painted shape or stencil. However, they are really just a paper or thin plastic material.
Many companies offer a plethora of different decals for home decoration. They come in letters, shapes, scenes, and sayings.
When applied to white or eggshell surfaces, they can completely change the look or theme of the room or space. If you have a difficult time finding this type of product or are unable to find some in your price range, you can even make some yourself.
Through the use of contact paper that is sticky, but not permanent, you can cut or stencil your own shapes, words, or scenes. After you have done so, place it in an area that is most appropriate.
Another way to change the look of walls without painting is by hanging a mural, poster, large photograph, or sheet of fabric. Most of these can be applied with a removable tack or adhesive.
You can find budget options by visiting a local vintage or second hand store. If you have decorated with very muted or simplistic furniture, try finding a swatch of fabric large enough to cover the wall in a unique or colorful pattern.
There are also a number of home decoration sources that offer cheaper fabric mural options that are large enough to hang on a wall and give your room a unique touch. You can even supersize a favorite photo or poster by visiting the photo center of your grocery store.
Your space can be completely altered without causing permanent damage or breaking any regulations. For areas like kitchens or bathrooms, try making a back splash out of a plank of wood and colorful tiles or mirror.
You can glue these pieces onto the painted wood and then prop up the project. It will liven up the room and camouflage the blank walls.
Floors can be redone or made over simply through the use of a great rug. If you are unable to change the carpet or tiling in your apartment or rental home, find a rug or swatch of fabric that expresses your taste and decor.
Those that enjoy do it yourself projects can make their own by macrame or sewing different fabrics and textures together. You may not be able to switch around the lighting in your place, but you do have the option of floor lamps that are stationary and can move with you whenever you choose to leave.
You could also switch out the shades of lamps that have been included or change the covers on sconces. As long as you replace the old items or decorations when you leave, your landlord or manager should have no problem with these minor changes and fixes.
It is still possible to turn your place into the home that you have always wanted. Use your creativity and ingenuity to renovate the space and make it true to your taste and style.
