How To Rent An Apartment As A Full Time Student

, it's been a great area for students. Surrounding Des Moines, DMACC or even Iowa State, are quality apartments you can choose to suit your needs.

But, as a college student, you most likely understand how difficult it can be to shell out for an apartment when attending school full time. The cost of rent may not be covered by earning money due to lack of time. Here are some helpful ways you can do to make your monthly housing costs more affordable:

1. Finding an Apartment

Begin your search for an apartment by getting in touch with your school's student life or financial aid department. Many colleges have assets and staff members that can help you locate an apartment that's close at hand and even can occasionally suggest based on existing specials or discounts.

2. Roommate or no roommate?

Many are uncertain whether to have a roommate or not. Roommates may be a worthy choice for financial purposes; they can help you pay for the rent, utilities, Internet, and cable TV. However, if you are a reserved person, having a roommate is not for you. You can think about looking for a studio or one-bedroom apartment.

3. Plan your budget

Before you sign a lease, figure out how much your share of rent will be for the semester. Then, when applying for student loans, make sure to include this amount, plus any extra expenses like utilities and Internet. When applying for FAFSA, be sure to do this at least 2-3 months in advance of when you'll need it - keep in mind you'll have an apartment deposit and costs that go along with it, so it's to your advantage to do this as soon as possible.

4. Check with the Department of Residence

Schools also offers apartments and dorm rooms for students and for their staff, but be wary, apartments within the campus can be expensive compared outside the campus. Look for apartments outside the campus that's near the bus route, is within walking distance, or has sufficient parking so you could drive to and from class without having to pay a premium. Whatever you choose the Department of Residence will have profound knowledge that can help you decide.

5. Read the Lease Carefully

It's very imperative, as many leases have parts in them regarding subleases, breaking your lease early, etc. If you have plans on leaving for a job or summer vacation, check out the conditions of your lease before you do so. In college towns, they usually require you to sign a 12-month lease and breaking it early will cause you to pay one to two month's worth of rent.
