Clean Install: A method of Windows XP Professional installation that puts the operating system into a new folder and uses its default settings the first time the operating system is loaded. In order to perform a clean installation of an operating system, the hard drive must be formatted and completely erased. To do a clean installation of an application, first remove the older version.

Repair Install: Sometimes you may need to repair the operating system. It attempts to only repair your copy of Windows without affecting your personal data. In many cases a repair installation can be enough to solve the problem. A repair install deletes the previous system files normally installed by windows XP and then reinstalls them off the disc. A repair install won't rebuild your computer's registry, delete applications and user settings, or fix problems being caused by a program.

Press any key on the keyboard and the recovery CD will begin loading the system setup. Just calm down while the installer finishes loading, as this may take several minutes to complete.

STEP 2. Keep an eye on welcome screen once the installer has finished loading. Press Enter once to continue. Using your up and down arrow keys, select your existing windows installation. Now press "R" to repair it. This will start a recovery install without formatting the hard drive or removing any existing data.

STEP 3. Before recovery process starts, accept the EULA if required and enter your product key, depending on what installation disk you are using. A product key is a combination of 25 alphanumeric characters.

STEP 4. Wait for the recovery process to reinstall the system files. It may take around 50-60 minutes. Once it is completed, Windows will reboot.
