How To Replace Broken Or Out Of Date Wall Lights

Walking around your home or an older property that you are interested in purchasing

, you may discover that some of the wall lights are looking fairly outdated or are broken. These sorts of issues can really detract from the overall appearance of your home, so it is important that you update to some newer lights or replace the broken ones as soon as possible. Fortunately, you should be able to complete either of these tasks without the need for an electrician.

The first step that you need to take is assessing what you need to do to remove the old wall lights. In most cases, the fixtures should easily come away from the wall by removing a few screws and pulling, but sometimes the lights are firmly attached and need a little more persuading (especially if theyre old). Inspect the fixtures and the surrounding surfaces thoroughly to determine whether youll need anything else to help you fix the holes up, like plaster and sandpaper.

You should also make sure that you have the replacement wall light ready and waiting to go before you begin work on the old fixtures. The mean reason for this is preventing bare wires from being exposed and left to hang from the wall until you have the time to replace the light, as this can be extremely dangerous. Make sure that you have also assembled all of the tools that you will need to complete the project, and perhaps a stepladder, too.

Then, you need to make sure that the electricity supply to the home has been turned off at the fuse box so that you cant accidentally electrocute yourself. Now you can begin removing the wall light from the wall, beginning with unscrewing the attachments and allowing the cover of the fixture to come away. You can then turn your attention to the wires the red one should be attached to the positive terminal, the black one to the negative terminal, and the yellow/green wire should be connected to the grounding terminal. Unscrew each of the pins holding these wires into place.

The final step of the process is to replace the old or broken fixtures with the brand new wall lights that you have picked out. Make sure that you attach the new light in the same way that the old one was attached, beginning by reattaching the wires to the correct terminals and screwing them into place. You can then screw the cover into place on the wall and return the electricity supply to the house.
