How To Restore Leather In Your Car

Car leather begins to fade over time, but there is no need to pay to have those leather seats in your car replaced

. Aaron Baird owns West Coast Recon, an automotive reconditioning company based in southern California. Here, he explains how its possible to fix faded leather so that it looks as good as new.

If you have faded leather in your car, it is generally on the bolster of the seat where you slide in and out every day, especially on the drivers seat. In fact, you have just rubbed the dye off the leather due to everyday use, so the leather looks worn and faded. Luckily, there is a simple way to repair it.

The Way To Restore Leather

We often begin to restore the leather with some leather cleaner and a brush, getting all the dirt out of it. We first cover up the other parts of the car that you dont want to get the dye on. Then, we scuff the leather that we are going to redye with a light pad. That helps create a certain surface area so that the dye can bond well and really sink in. Next, we match the dye by the eye to get the perfect color match for your leather. After the dye is ready, we put it in a small airbrush, which is a High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) gun, and airbrushed the leather making sure no impurities are on it. In the end, it looks as if it had never faded.

Usually, this process works well. However, it wont work when sunscreen and lotion are soaked deep into the leather of the seat. In that case, the leather will be filled with oil and the dye will not bond and sink in. Luckily, I have only seen that instance once.

Four Primary Colors

We have four primary colors when we match paint to the leather: black, white, red and yellow. We can make pretty much any color that is in a car today with those four primary colors. I have been doing the work for 15 years, so it takes me only 5 to 10 minutes to match the color. We will guarantee that the color matches perfectly.

Additionally, we are able to repair small rips or tears in your cars leather interior, and take care of cigarette or cigar burns not only in the leather but also in your carpets and vinyl areas of your car. We can also repair and dye leather steering wheels. Call us today and have your car leather restored in no time.
