In my previous article "How to Backup PST File
," I described the importance of Outlook.pst and the different methods to create a backup of PST. You may anytime need to restore the backup of PST file; therefore, this article provides information about the procedures of restoring PST backup. However, before I continue describing the process of restoring backup, you must understand the situations that generate the need to restore backup. Following can be the situations under which you need to reinstate backup:
* Your Outlook.pst file has been damaged.
* You have permanently deleted some important email messages and now want to restore them.
* Outlook.pst file has been accidentally deleted and you have lost all of your important emails, contacts, etc.
* Hard disk partition where PST is stored has been deleted or formatted.
In any of the aforementioned situations, you may need to restore PST backup. But, how will you restore backup depends on the way you had created the backup. Depending on the method you had used to create the backup of PST file, following procedures can be used for restoring backup:
* If you had taken manual backup in a Pen drive, CD, or DVD then copy the PST file from storage media and then paste on your computer's hard disk drive. After that create a new profile in Outlook and then import the PST file into the newly created profile.
* If you had taken manual backup on hard disk drive then import the PST file into an existing or new Outlook profile to recover the lost data.
* If you had taken backup using Microsoft Backup utility or any third-party backup utility, then start that utility and follow on screen instructions to restore the backup file.
Here, I am assuming that you had taken backup using Microsoft Backup utility. In that scenario, you need to execute following steps to restore backup for getting notes, contacts, attachments, emails, etc. back in your hand:
1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup.
2. Click the Next button.
3. Select the Restore files and settings option and click the Next button.
4. Select the files to restore and click the Next button.
5. Click the Finish button. The restoring process starts.
6. Now, import the restored backup file into your Outlook profile.
This way you can make you smile once again by getting all of your emails, notes, contacts, images, attachments, etc. back in your hand.
