How To Safely Mow An Overgrown Lawn
There are many reasons why lawns become overgrown, including peoples busy lifestyles, and properties being left vacant for long periods of time. No matter what the cause, an overgrown lawn is not a pretty sight and at some stage, the owners will want to bring the sod back under control to become a healthy green carpet of grass once more.
While mowing overgrown grass may seem like a relatively simple process involving a lot of hard work with the mower, the process can have dangers involved to the health of the sod if the mowing process is not done correctly, including possibly killing the lawn altogether.
Damage occurs to overgrown lawn when too much leaf material is removed in a single mowing session. This is because as the lawn has grown longer, a major and vital part of the lawn has also grown much higher, this part of the lawn is called the crown, and it supports the entire life of the lawn. Without the crown, the lawn will die, and there will be literally many thousands of crowns in any lawn.
With the health and survival of the lawn crowns of highest importance, any lawn which is overgrown must be safely lowered in height over several lawn mowing sessions, gradually reducing the height with each lawn mowing until we have reached the optimum height for our lawn.
When lawn mowing is done in this way, the crowns of the lawn will naturally keep reducing in height as the lawn reduces in height, and we can return our lawn to it's best health and appearance without causing any damage whatsoever.
Always try to mow overgrown lawns when the grass is in its active growing season and not under any stress factors such as extreme heat or cold. Spring and Fall are the best times of year for most lawn types.
Most of the grass leaf length can be removed at the first mowing while using the highest setting on the mower. The same process is then repeated each week while slowly reducing mowing heights until the desired height is achieved.
If at any time the grass begins browning off from an earlier mowing, then do not reduce the mowing height again. Instead, keep the height of the lawn mower at exactly the same height as the previous cut until the lawn is fully greened again.
By following this simple process, it is very easy to safely mow an overgrown lawn and safely turn it back into that wonderful carpet of green we all desire from our home lawns.
