Tooth decay is seen to be more prevalent in children than in adults nowadays. The main reason why this is prevalent is because children are more attracted to sweets than adults. These sweets contain sugars which are hard to remove from the tooth's surface. The major cause of tooth decay is plaque. It is the debris accumulated around the gum line, the edge of fillings, and grooved surfaces of teeth. If kids do not clean their teeth regularly; the plaque can accumulate make tartar. Both, tartar and plaque have acids which eventually dissolve away the tooth's enamel and make holes in the teeth. If ignored in the beginning, tooth decay can enter into the vessels surrounding the tooth area. Eventually, atern toothache may be observed.
The most incredible way to avoid tooth decay is to ensure healthy oral hygiene. Children should be taught to brush their teeth after meals and most importantly; before they go to bed. Regular flossing will also be a good practice to keep up a good oral hygiene. Apart from inducing this habit in their kids, parents must also take them to the dentist regularly. Next is about what you eat. Avoid giving your children a lot many sugary or acidic foods. More importantly, you should keep a track of how often he/she eats sweets rather than how many. The number of times of your kid's consumption of sugary foods as well as foods that have a high acidic content makes him/her more probable of getting a tooth decay.
A healthy diet for your children will contain fruits, vegetables, milk and cheese. However, you must know that although fruits and vegetables are healthy foods, they contain acids in them. Small amounts of these fruits and vegetables might not be something to worry about. However, when your kids eat large amounts, ensure that your give them some alkaline foods like milk or cheese to neutralize the results.
Teach your youngsters the habit of brushing teeth on a regular basis, especially before they sleep. Use toothpastes that include fluoride in them. It is observed that in areas where people use water containing fluoride, tooth decay is less common. You can use toothpastes, mouthwashes or even tablets consisting of fluoride. However, make sure that you do not go beyond the required dosage, because that can initiate problems. Keep up a good oral hygiene and smile confidently!
