How To Score From Around The Golf Green

If You Are Going To Miss, Make Sure You Miss Well.

Do you get ready for the season and practice on your golf game in the Spring?

I do, in fact it's my favourite part of the year, above all, I really enjoy working on the short game of golf in the spring evenings.

Over the last few years me and my golfing buddy Jim have spent hours working on golf shots of 60 yards and less with a variety of wedges.

...And if you want some good advice - practice competitively with a player as good as you.

Anyway, one evening this year we were chipping on a practice green, and we'd move from one place to another, getting a variety of shots in.

On most holes we play to we typically score 28 -32 inside 3 feet and 3 - 5 actually holed with the chip, we are both players who can shoot par, and so we are pretty good around the greens.

We moved to a new location, at the back of the green, about 6 foot above the green on a high point, so we were playing from above, to a green that sloped away from us.

Well after over an hour or struggling, our best score was 6 balls close, inside 3 feet and only 1 in the hole, from 40 balls. We tried high shots, low shots, spinning shots, we tried various wedges, , 9,8,7 and 5 ironsnone go us consistently close.

So we were 80% worse that from all other positions around the green.

The lesson was simpleKeep the ball in an easy place to get up and down from, avoid the tough spots which are going to be virtually impossible to get the ball close.

Try this

Next time you play your home course, notice the areas around the green which are going to be hardest to play from, and also look for the easy spots, make notes on your course planner, for example cross hatch the bad spots, and circle the good spots.

Since doing this I have found the biggest scoring benefit comes on the greens you'll be playing to from a long way out, long par 3's, long par 4's and par 5's that are reachable in two shots.

So make a plan, be sure where you need to avoid, and play for the areas which give you the most chance to score.
