How To Select A Plastic Surgeon
Why Is Your Selection Important?
Why Is Your Selection Important?
Plastic surgery involves major medical procedures. Plus, these procedures affect your outward appearance. These arent things you want just anyone doing. You need to put some effort into your search for the plastic surgeon that is right for you. Keep in mind that you dont have to go to a surgeon who is located in the same city as you are. If you are not comfortable with any of the choices in your area, seek a surgeon elsewhere. There are many people that travel every day for plastic surgery. In fact, many plastic surgeon offices can help you plan your stay if you are traveling in from out of town.
What To Look For?
First, know the qualifications of the surgeon. Are they currently Board Certified? What agency are they certified with? Being certified by the The American Board of Plastic Surgeons is different than being certified in another area within the medical field. It doesnt mean that the other surgeon cant do quality plastic surgery, it simply means that if you are having to choose from a list of surgeons, one that is certified in plastic surgery is a great place to start.
Ensure that your surgeon is either a licensed MD or DO. Dont hesitate to ask for proof of their license and ask where they went to medical school. You can call and verify both medical licenses and proof of board certification by calling the organization that granted them the license or certification. This is encouraged.
Friends, families, co-workers, doctors or nurses that you have a trusting relationship with are all great resources for plastic surgeons.
Ask about your plastic surgeons experience. Is this going to be their first procedure or their 5,000th? There is no guarantee that the surgeon performing the surgery for the 5,000th time is going to do a better job than the surgeon performing it for the first time, but it is a matter of what you are comfortable with.
Once you have your list of surgeons, start visiting. You want to select a surgeon that you are comfortable with. You are going to have to be honest with what you want and you have to trust in what they tell you. If you are not comfortable upon your visit with the plastic surgeon, keep visiting until you find the one that is a best match for you. If you are considering a surgeon that lives in a different location, have a phone consultation prior to an in face visit. There may be no need for an in person visit if it didnt feel right on the phone. Trust your instinct.
You need to look for a surgeon that fully answers all of your questions without irritation. They should be open to listening to your concerns and your desired outcomes. You are looking for a surgeon where you can have a team relationship and not where the surgeon tells you how things are going to go.
