How To Sharpen A Cordless Hedge Cutter

Hedge trimmers need to be continuously sharpened in order to perform to their best ability

. The blades need to be taken apart in order to get sharpened and cleaned effectively. This is also the safest method to clean them. If you do it properly, cleaning and sharpening your blades will be a quick and painless procedure that can be accomplished in only minutes and not hours. You can also test if you sharpened them correctly. Always wear safety goggles when working with your hedge cutters to avoid injury to your eyes and gloves to avoid injuries to your fingers.

First, you need to disassemble the hedge trimmers. This is a very easy process. Place the hedge trimmers on a flat and clean surface. Make absolute certain that your blades are facing away from you to reduce the risk of injury. You will need pliers to take them apart. Place the pliers on the bolt that is on the hedge trimmers. They need to be clamped very securely. Then you have to twist it in a counter-clockwise motion to get it off. This is all that is holding the blades together. Now separate the pair of blades. Now that they are dissembled we can begin sharpening them individually.

With the blade facing away from you, place the handle in your hand. Simply slide a metal filer down the blade slowly until you get to the sharp tip. Do this repeatedly but slowly for a few minutes until the sharpening is completed. Repeat this on the other blade.

They are now sharp so all you need to do is to test to be sure that they got sharpened correctly. It is as simple as using a plain piece of paper. Place the paper next to the blade and attempt to cut it without using too much force. Once it slices quite easily without needing additional force, your blades are sharp enough. If they arent able to be cut easily repeat the sharpening process and complete the test again until it passes.

The process is quite different if you have hedge trimmers that are powered instead of being manual. These often require a bit more care and arent able to be serviced by individuals who arent trained professionally.

Some trimmers are not able to have the blades sharpened though. It is easy to tell though. If your hedge trimmer blades dont have any bolts, it means that the blades arent meant to be serviced and you need to replace the hedge trimmer completely. However, if you see bolts it means that it can be disassembled and serviced as necessary. You may want to be certain your hedge trimmer can be serviced before you purchase it. Otherwise, you may be replacing it a lot more often than you want to or can afford.

It cannot be stated enough the importance of using proper safety precautions when servicing any tools that have the potential to harm you. Wear eye protection and hand protection and the experience will be much smoother.
