Getting a laptop is getting complicated. There are about a million different brands these days, and it's getting pretty hard to tell them apart. You need to have an advanced degree in engineering just to tell the difference. The good news is that they are getting cheaper than ever, so if you don't have much cash to spend, you can still get a pretty decent machine. But before you hit the shops, make sure you know what you're looking at.

Screen size didn't used to be important, and or some people they aren't much of a big deal. But if you are going to be using your machine for entertainment, then a bigger screen is definitely better. More and more people are downloading or streaming movies online, so you want to make sure your screen is not going to let you down.

Loaded software is also a concern. Lately, more and more computers are coming connected to cloud computing systems, so there's no need to load your own software. This is both a plus and a minus. If you don't really mind which apps you use, you should do pretty well with cloud based laptops. But if you are attached to a certain brand, you may feel constrained. Depending on your own preferences, you should choose accordingly.

Naturally, hard disk and memory size are important. The bigger the hard disk, the more stuff you can store. Of course, with so many affordable cloud storage options available, this might not be as important as it used to. Depending on what kind of files you are storing, this may be a concern. But hard drives these days are generally big enough so they won't be a problem.

For many people processor speed and configuration is the most crucial element. This will determine how fast your computer can be. If you are using any resource intensive software like graphics, music or video editing, this is where you should focus your attention. Everything else being equal, you need to get the fastest processor configuration you can. And as you'd expect, this is the main driver of price.

Of course, there's also upgrade ability to take into account. With prices so cheap, it's not so much a concern anymore. In six months to a year, if you want to upgrade, it may be easier and more cost effective to simply get another machine. But just make sure there's extra room for more memory. If your machine is getting sluggish, and you aren't quite ready to spring for a new one, then sticking in some more memory may be a cheap solution.
