How To Stay Healthy When Eating From Street Vendors

We've all heard rumours of the dreaded Delhi belly and other sicknesses you can contract whilst eating from street vendors abroard. By following a few simple tips you can gurantee that you will get the best food that the country has to offer and you will stay healthy.

- Try to stick to what you know

What I mean by this is if you know that you (and your stomach) can't handle spicy things then ask if its spicy, or use a hand gesture if they do not speak english. This way you have won half the battle right there, by knowing whether you can eat a type of food you are already narrowing your options.

- Look For fresh Ingredients.

Now I'm not saying that you have to find a street vendor how keep live chickens and large knives, but you do have to make sure that the ingredients are sound. The best way to do this is to inspect any vegetables thay have on their cart, If they have started to wilt and shrivel it's probably best to avoid that vendor.

- Look for Smoke

When in a crowded city full of vendors an easy way to make sure you have good food is to look for smoke. This diesn't mean that the vendor is burning anything, what it does mean is that they are cooking it from scratch while you wait. Not only does that mean that your are getting fresh cooked food instead of something atht has been kept warm, but it also means that the food has been sterilised whilst cooking. A good hot pan is one of the golden rules of eating from street vendors.

- When in Rome does as the Romans do

When faced with a number of street vendors, go to the one the locals go to. This is also a golden rule when eating from street vendors, but you also have to follow the other rules as well. So make sure that the pan is hot, go to the one that has the biggest queue of locals, but also make sure that your stomach can handle it.

I discovered this the hard way, and my street vendor food started to make a horrible comeback half way through one of those cheap flights to London. The bathroom queue was very long, in the end I held through it, but io wouldn't wish it on anyone.

The best thing you can do if you have a handle on the native language is to befriend a local and ask them what is best.
