How To Stop A Puppy From Biting - In Just 4 Simple Steps
Sometimes it is cute to have your puppy pampered at your hands
. Your puppy gets used to its own way of playing by biting and using mouth, so he think it is the same way to play with you.
However, have you ever think that your puppy's teeth and body will grows eventually and become stronger?
And those nipping will become an uncomfortable and dangerous rough playing bites.
In this case you should start training your puppy to stop biting and let him release his eager on a toy.
There are few steps here to help you to stop your puppy biting.
Step 1 : Decrease biting pressure with the 'Ouch' method
If your puppy start to bite you hard, do yell 'Ouch' so your puppy stop for a second and do the same if your puppy bites again so that your puppy learn that it is unacceptable. Once your puppy understand your feedback you can start to reduce biting.
Step 2: Replace with toy or chew bone
As consequences to their teething, your puppy will began to chew more as it grows. If your puppy start to chew on things that he is not allowed to chew on, tell him a firm 'No' and replace it with a toy. This teach your puppy good biting from the bad ones and let your puppy know what they are actually allowed to chew on. You can also give an ice cube for your puppy to chew on to heal the pain of his teething.
Step 3: Teaching 'OFF'
Grab a handful of treat and get your puppy to sniff it at your hands. Tell your puppy 'OFF' once he lick on your handful of treats and wait until he react to it. Immediately reward your puppy once they do as your command. Repeat this several times and you will see the result.
Step 4: Remove 'reward'
If your puppy still ignores the feedback you clearly communicate, remove yourself from your puppy confinement area so that your puppy knows that he had just lost a human playmate. After 2 minutes, you can get back to your puppy and talk to him, pet him to show that you still love him, it's just that painful biting behavior is unacceptable.
One more method that have been recommended by vet is grab the scruff of your puppy's neck and give it a quick shake. If all these methods don't work for you, you can try out a technique called "time out" by placing your puppy in the crate and to leave the room for a short period of time.
