Stop That Dog Barking NOW!!! Article 3

Barking is natural; it's how dogs communicate with each other & with you. However, continuous barking is annoying, for you & your neighbours, & you need to learn how to stop it now! But, you don't want to stop your dog barking completely, rather just teach him to stop barking when he is told to stop. As with all dog training you must be consistent, calm, kind & always reward the good behaviour.

Excessive barking can be the result of boredom, stress, loneliness, and a need for attention. You need to isolate the cause of the barking before you can train to stop it.

Your dog may be barking because of something he is afraid of. This will usually be the case if the barking occurs when he is exposed to loud noises like thunderstorms, or workmens drills etc. Also indicated by his posture which will be standing with his ears back & his tail tucked low under his belly.

1) Cure Fear Barking

a) Identify which noises are causing the fear & de-sensitise him by following the same procedures as outlined in Article 2.

b) Try to reduce the impact of noise from outside by leaving a TV or Radio on. Reduce the ability of your dog to see these fear triggers by shutting him in a windowless room or basement, or if that's not possible, by closing curtains or blinds.

Your dog may be barking due to frustration, check the area where the dog is kept & look for anything that is out of his reach that he may want such as toys, water or food.

a) If he is allowed to have these things make sure he can get at them, if he is not allowed to have these things move them out of his sight.

If your dog is kept outside, it may be other people, children or animals that is causing his frustration.

b) Secretly visit the outside area without your dog seeing you & check what is going around him when he is barking. You may find that the neighbours children are teasing him, a quiet word with their parents should solve that problem.

2) Bark Collars

Bark collars are specially designed to deliver a negative stimulus when your dogs bark. There are several types available.

a) Citronella Collar - This collar has a container that you fill with a citronella solution. When your dog barks the container releases a measured spray, dogs do not like the citronella smell so the spray is a negative stimulus that your dog will associate with barking. The downside of the citronella collar is that the microphone which triggers the spray is sometimes sensitive enough to pick up other noises, this results in your dog getting sprayed when he hasn't barked Not Fair !!.Also, some dogs can tell when the citronella container is empty and will resume barking.

b) Aversive Sound Collar: This collar emits a high-frequency sound when your dog barks. Some are activated by the noise of the bark, while others are hand-held and activated by a handler. The noise activated ones have the same drawback as the citronella one in that it can be activated by other noises.

c) Electric Shock Collar: I don't recommend an electric shock collar to control your dog's barking. The electric shock is painful & not a humane way to treat your dog.

The main drawback of any bark collar is that it doesn't address the underlying cause of the barking. You may be able to eliminate the barking, but the causes are still there. In response to these triggers your dog may develop other behaviours instead, like digging, destructive chewing, escaping or even aggression. If you do use a bark collar that's fine but you must make sure you identify the cause of the barking and work towards training to alleviate that problem. You should never use a bark collar on your dog if his barking is due to separation anxiety, fears or phobias, because punishment always makes fear and anxiety behaviours worse.
