How To Swing A Golf Club

If one takes the natural approach to swinging a common stick and applies this to a golf club

, you will instantly have the core idea of how to swing a golf club. It will serve as one's introduction to a love hate relationship with a game that has become one of the most popular pastimes around. The game of golf has brought fame and fortune to few, and anxiety alternating with joy to many. It is a highly addictive form of self-abuse, and the ability to practice a consistently effective 'swing' constitutes the essence of the sport.

Swinging a golf club involves nearly every part of human anatomy, from the position of the hands and feet, to the coordinated 'sweep' that when done correctly shifts all the power and velocity to the point of impact. All of this preparation and focus is for the purpose of lifting a tiny (golf) ball weighing a mere 1.6 oz. It hardly seems necessary, but the components of the swing culminate into a force that is highly variable depending on the connection made with the face of the club and the ball. To break it down, let us just say that swinging properly is not a 'one size fits all' deal.

The comfort of striking the golf ball is going to be key to how you swing, and the fine points will make the swing more effective. First, for holding a golf club there are two major choices (a) the 'baseball grip' just the way you would hold a baseball bat or a stick and (b) the 'interlocking' grip whereas one locks the fingers on their two hands around the club grip. Neither grip is absolutely essential, but most 'pros' go with interlocking, probably because the hands act in concert more easily this way. The hands are normally placed a couple of inches from the heel of the club handle, which should be tacky to avoid slippage.

The swing itself involves approaching (addressing) the ball usually with the feet equally spread and the ball in the middle. When the golfer slowly draws back on the club, it is roughly level with the shoulders on a 45-degree angle at which point the golfer will attempt a 'level' swing towards the ball, making contact with the ball before the turf. To ensure a proper use of the various slants of the club heads, which give the ball different degrees of loft, this process must remain consistent. When it does not, the ball will not vary in loft or distance and the swing becomes nothing more than a 'poke' that moves the ball forward uncontrollably and usually away from the objective.

Finally, the speed of the swing should be considered. Hitting the ball hard does not make it go further. What makes it go far is when the swing is balanced, consistent, level, and at a speed that makes the shaft act as a springespecially if it is a fiberglass shaft. During the swing, the shaft will flex and then straighten upon impact. That phenomenon is the basis for getting a 'whip' into the ball that propels it as accurately and far as the integrity of the swing will allow.

If you hit the turf, first (called hitting 'fat') the swing becomes corrupted and the ball will trickle down the fairway, followed by foul language. Hit the ball too high and it 'tops off' with similar trickle and foul language. But, if you hit the ball first at the angle intended to make the best of the club face AND at the right speed to get spring out of the shaftyou get a nice, clean sweet-spot hit that will, at least for that brief moment, give you and those who witness the shot a distinct feeling of superiority and accomplishment. That feeling lasts until at least until the next stroke.

Just follow these golf tips and you will be well on your way to shooting lower scores.
