How To Take Better Care Of Your Digestive System
As its name suggests, the digestive system is a system in the body where the digestion of food takes place
. It is referred to by other names such as the gastrointestinal tract, the alimentary canal and the digestive tract. Digestion is a complicated process which starts in the mouth where food is chewed and broken down by enzymes in the saliva. It then goes down into the esophagus and the intestines. What many people are not aware of is the fact that the condition of the digestion system greatly influences our weight and the state of our health and well-being. There are actually several ailments that are a direct result of an impaired digestive system.
Being aware of how important the digestive system is, we should take measures to ensure that it is constantly in its best condition. The following are a few suggestions on how to take care of your digestive system.
1.Do not mix different types of food in one meal. Including a wide variety of foods in a single meal can strain the digestive system because not all foods are processed in the same way. When the digestive tract has to perform different processes, the result is incomplete digestion.
2.Practice portion control. The digestive system would be able to function properly and complete the work that it has to do when it is not overwhelmed with a large amount of food to process. In addition, controlling the serving size of the foods you eat will help you lose weight.
3.Stop eating red meat. The digestion time of beef and pork is quite long. For this reason, we feel tired and sluggish after a meal that includes red meat. Another good reason to avoid red meat is that it is high in fat. If you don't want to feel zapped of energy after a meal, eat vegetables and white meat instead.
4.Create reasonable gaps between meals. If you keep on putting new food into your digestive system even before it has completely processed your last meal, you will be putting it into a lot of strain. Always give it time to finish digesting the food in your stomach before you eat again.
5.Avoid certain foods that cause indigestion such as sugar, milk, pastries, jam, jelly, and pudding. Instead of these, eat fiber-rich foods. At the same time, avoid foods that have too much protein, fats, salt, and carbohydrates.
