An oil painting can keep the colors unchanged for centuries if it has been stored
properly; on the contrary, if its kept improperly, there might have cracking, peeling and discoloration occur. So, how to protect your oil paintings and avoid damages?
First, on the back of canvas you can coat it with two thin layers of natural beeswax which is previously dissolved in turpentine. This way can completely prevent the oil painting from humid air.
Second, the oil paintings should avoid from longtime direct sunshine, because ultraviolet rays is destructive to colors and will cause fading and discoloration.
Third, pay attention to the oil painting storage room, it must be ventilate and moisture proof. Keep the room as far as possible away from the bathroom and kitchen, away from the dust and smoke which could damage the paintings. Also the room should be kept with certain degree of temperature and humidity. If the paintings become damp, they must be dried slowly, do not ever put the damp painting exposed to the sun, or else the picture is easy to come off.
Fourth, do not put oil paintings by face to face, in case high temperature will result in the paintings stick together and picture damage.
Fifth, put the picture outwards when rolling up the painting, and roll it with a layer of paper, then wrap with plastic sheeting to prevent painting from cracking.
Sixth, if oil painting on the wall has been dusted, gently wipe clean it with a damp cloth. If there is fumes on it, use a bit soap water or just water to softly try to scrub wash it, and use sponges to drain the water on the picture quickly and then use electric fan to blow the picture surface gently. If what you deal with is paintings with age and cracked, you should use as less water as possible, or some part just dry sweep. And if you want to take care of the painting with professional varnish, then please clean the picture surface with clean cloth before you spray the varnish.
Seventh, generally oil paintings can be kept two or three hundred years, but as time goes on, some paintings can be cracking after several decades. If you have many collectibles , you can wrap them with plastic sheeting and put them in wooden box to prevent mechanical damage.
