How To Transfer A Domain Name Without Problem
There are many justifications in wanting to transfer a domain name to a new registrar
. The future registrar may be more affordable, provide an outstanding platform and customer service, or give away a limited time discount coupon code that is too tempting not to be used.
The owner of the domain has to check four major points with the old registrar in order to transfer a domain name from a registrar to another:
- The domain name should be unlocked to allow approved transfer.
- The domain name should not be made private by any privacy system like WHOIS Private Registration. If it is, it will have to be disabled.
- The registrant and administrator email addresses should be valid and working.
- The domain's EPP key, which will be needed later, has to be identified.
The new registrar provides a domain field where the domain "mydomain.com" has to be entered. The system can tell if the domain is transferable or not. Domains close to expire or new domains that are still in their first 60 days of registration can't be transfered. It is possible to transfer in bulk with most registrars when listing on a new line each domain at submission.
After the domain is accepted as transferable, the new registrar takes the transfer order through their shopping cart. After payment is made the domain transfer is ready to start, the whole process taking some 48 hours to complete. This time is necessary for the two registrars to communicate and make sure that the transfer is legitimate and authorized by the domain's owner.
An email is first sent by the new registrar to the admin email address informing of the transfer order. The email message contains a link to be clicked in order to start the process. This link points to a webpage with a choice box having the option to approve or deny the transfer. The EPP key, which is available in the old registrar, may also be asked at that point. Some registrars ask for this authorization key right in their platform instead of an online form.
When the transfer has been accepted by the administrator of the domain, the new registrar proceeds with different WHOIS checks and notifies the old registrar of the transfer request. At that moment the old registrar sends an email message to the administrator with a link that directs to the same kind of approval page we already know.
After transfer is accepted by the administrator with the old registrar, the process continues and is soon to be completed. The new registrar sends an email when the transfer is finally completed at best two days later. In the case of any issues arising along the way, notifications are sent. It is unlikely to have any transfer problems if the four major points listed in the second paragraph of this article were checked.
After the last notification is received, it is necessary to check if the new registrar has accurate WHOIS infos and if the DNS servers listed are correct and point to the website's web server. If the domain was parked, the new registrar should have a parking option with their own DNS entries and the possibility to forward the domain to another address.
When the different steps and duration of the process are known, it is not so difficult to transfer a domain name. More information can be read at most domain registration services.
