Ukulele is a small guitar with four strings. The ukulele is similar to the guitar, in terms of the tunes. It comes in four sizes which are the soprano, the concert, the tenor and the baritone.

Ukulele beginners usually start with the soprano ukulele since it is cost effective and is also easy to play, while the more experienced ones who are usually familiar with the guitar generally play baritone ukulele. Baritone ukulele is crafted for experts and costs a few thousand dollars.

The price of the ukuleles depends on the quality of the wood and the craftsman ship. Ukulele has a similar shape as guitar but can have slight variation shapes like oval shaped, boat shaped etc.

The standard tuning for soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles is known as C tuning which is tuned to g c e a while the baritone type of ukuleles is tuned to d g b e which flows from low to high.

Another common tuning tone for the sopranos and concerts is D tuning which is tuned as a, s, f # b. This tuning is generally higher than the C tuning.

D tuning produces a higher tone for smaller ukuleles. For a beginner, tuning the ukulele can be a difficult task but the more you practice the easier it gets.

The music from a ukulele is dependent on the tuning. Music notes can sound distorted unless it is tuned properly. Tuning a ukulele can be a fun activity if you get your child get involved in the process.

Some basic steps for the proper tuning of your ukulele include:

For tuning the ukulele you have to use a tuning instrument which acts as a reference point for the various notes.

Press the lower G note on your ukulele and rotate the button slowly. Play a tune each time until you are able to match your ukuleles tone with the reference tone. In the same manner, also tune the other three strings. Keep playing the reference tone till all your strings get matched with it.

Now press the fifth button of the low G string and shift from the G string to the C string which will usually match. If they do not match, rotate the tuning button of the C string till they match.

Now E string is tested by pressing down the C string till they match. Verification is done if the A string is tuned by pressing the E string. Make the necessary adjustments until they match the tune of the tuning instrument exactly.
