How To Use Feedback When You Have Bipolar Disorder
How to Use Feedback When You Have Bipolar Disorder
Before learning how to handle feedback, we must first define feedback. Simply put, it is input that you receive from others, yourself, your senses (what you see, hear, smell, feel), etc. It becomes feedback, when you take that input and turn it into information. For example, you may feel your finger burning on the stove, but the information is "My finger is burning". Using that information you "Pull your finger off the hot stove". In this simple example, you received input, turned it into information, and used that information to take an action. That is the process of using feedback.
Feedback comes in many forms, and it can be in relation to what we are telling ourselves, and what other people are telling us. For a more complex example take a work situation. You are trying to follow the instructions of your supervisor on how to do a task, but your boss corrects a part of your work by telling you to do it a different way (input), you take that input and turn it into information on how to improve the process of your work. When you use that information to change how you are doing your work, that is action you have taken based on the information you gathered from your boss's input. That is a classic example of how to use feedback.
Now that you understand the process of using feedback to create action, let's talk about in in terms how to handle various types of feedback when you have bipolar disorder. A big part of managing our illness is related to finding the right combination of medication. For example, your doctor prescribes a certain medication, and you start taking it. As in our first example, with the stove, feedback will come in the form of physical and emotional symptoms. The new medication may make you feel tired (input), you take that input and create information that you provide back to your doctor. You may decide that the symptom does not warrant a change in medication or dose amount so you continue to take the medication. In a few weeks you determine that you feel better emotionally (input). You tell your doctor about the input, and you both create information about it making a positive difference in your life. Based on that information, you and your doctor may decide not to make any more changes or to make a slight tweak to the medication. You may need to repeat this process several times to get your emotions in control with as few side effects as possible.
In gathering input on medication, it is helpful to track the medication you are taking, the physical symptoms, if any you are having, what is going on in your life, and how you feel about it. All this input, can be put together to create information that you and your doctor can use to make any adjustments to your medication. You should do this every day until you get your medication just right. I will be adding a mood and medication tracking form in my store.
