How To Use Keywords In Your Articles

Keywords reflect the essence of your article

Keywords reflect the essence of your article. People use keywords and keyword phrases in search engines to search for articles and websites relevant to their specific needs. The placement and amount of times your keywords appear help to make your article or website one of the first to appear in a search.

Keywords and Keyword Phrases:

A keyword is one word that describes the entire content of your article. For example, if you were writing an article about top ten watches, your main keyword would be "watches." You may also have secondary key words in your content, such as "Rolex" or "Seiko" if writing about top ten watches, to provide additional search engine results. These secondary keywords should be used sparingly and always in conjunction with your primary keyword. Keyword phrases are usually 2 to 5 words in length. It is best to have a longer keyword phrase and you should think about what words reader might use to search for your topic. For example, if your article was about "How to Remove Mould" your keyword phrase could be "remove mould" or "how to remove mould."

Picking Keywords:

If brainstorming for keywords and phrases proves too difficult, there are many free online tools you can use to check for keywords. These tools will reveal high-demand keywords and phrases; you can use these results as a guideline to focus on the most popular searched words and phrases. Once you have found your keyword or phrase, check its competition by searching for the word in several different search engines. Take note of the amount of results for each keyword you search, keeping in mind that the lower the competition the easier it is for your content to rank higher.

Keyword Placement:

The keyword or phrase should appear within the first 100 characters or in the first or second sentence of your article. Ideally, your keyword should appear approximately 5 times within the first 150 words. The higher the amount of keywords in your title and first few lines of your article or website, the higher the search engines will rank your content. Be very careful not to place too many keywords in a sentence or paragraph. Unnecessary repetition of keywords or phrases is referred to as "keyword stuffing" and should be avoided. A search engine or reader can view this as spam and your article may be rejected by many search engines or simply overlooked by readers. Keywords and phrases should appear natural and flow within your articles. Ideally, keywords and phrases should appear in the title, description, body of your webpage or article, name of your webpage, anchor text, or text that is used to link a page, and H1 tags, which are used in HTML to emphasize a topic or sub-topic.
