How To Use Schleich Fantasy Miniatures Figurines In Fairytale Dioramas
Creating a fairytale diorama can be fun and easy
, especially when you populate it with fantasy miniatures. Because its a fairytale, the setting and characters are limited only by your imagination.
The key to creating a truly awesome diorama is finding the right fantasy miniatures. The quality and detail of the figurines help take the diorama to a higher level. Brands like Safari LTD and Schleich figurines are available with a variety of fairytale characters including knights, elves, fairies, dinosaurs and dragons. If you cant get excited about a fairytale diorama with this cast of characters you should probably find something else to make.
With such a wide variety of figurines to choose from, the best place to start is with the concept for your diorama. Will it be an action scene: a knight battles a dragon to save a princess, or elves fight prehistoric dinosaurs; or a landscape, where elves live peacefully with unicorns, or jesters perform for the royal family?
These are among the possibilities you can create using Safari and Schleich figurines. There are more than 50 fantasy miniatures in the Schleich knights series, more than 20 in the elf series, and plenty of animals and accessories to round out your fairytale diorama.
Once youve decided what your diorama will look like, you can start to create it. Two things you need to know are the size of the fantasy miniatures and how many of them youll be using. This determines what size your diorama will need to be to house everything you want to include in it.
Will everything fit inside a shoe box, two shoeboxes, or even bigger than that? Will your diorama need to be horizontal or vertical? If youll be featuring flying dragons, for instance, a vertical format would work best to give you the height a dragon needs to fly. If youre staging knights in a tournament, youll have several knights, horses, tents, and bystanders. This would work well in a horizontal format.
You can use colored construction paper to create background features like ground and sky, but will you also create things like houses and trees out of paper or use miniatures for them as well? Keep in mind the colors in your miniature figurines when creating your backdrop: too much of the same color and they may blend into the background.
Fantasy miniatures are not limited merely to people and creatures: Safari and Schleich figurines also make miniature trees, castles, animals, and just about everything else you need to make your diorama exactly how you pictured it.
Now that youve done all the preparation work, collected your figurines, and made whatever parts and pieces youre going to create yourself, its time to put your diorama together, and bring your fairytale to life.
Start with the backdrop, gluing your sky, ground, and middle-ground onto your box. Dont forget the sides and top of the box: although you might not see them when you look directly into the diorama, from other viewpoints they will be noticeable.
Place your fantasy miniatures into your scene, starting from the back and moving forward. If you want your diorama to be permanent, you can glue your miniatures in place, using rubber cement (so they can be repositioned). Dont do this, however, until youve got everything positioned just where you want it; repeatedly pulling up your figures could rip or tear the paper.
