Improving your samples is not an easy task. Moreover, finding the right samples takes time and a lot of skill. If you do not have the right resources and sources for finding good samples you will be at a loss and a disadvantage, in terms of improving your sounds.

Now, one of the most difficult and widely sought after practices of sampling music comes from getting great percussion sounds. But how do you get high quality percussion sounds to sample? This is a question that has been on the minds of many amateur and professional musicians since the advent of digital and electronic music began.

However there are a few secrets to learning how to achieve amazing percussion sounds. Now, this may come as a shock to you, but if you want great percussion sounds use vocal samples. I know you might be thinking, why on earth would you use vocal sounds to get percussion sounds? I admit, it does sound a bit absurd or ridiculous, but actually vocal sounds lend themselves to great percussion sounds.

Let us go backwards for a second and look at the root of the matter. Vocal sounds are in themselves percussive noises. English, for example is a Germanic language and German is a very guttural and percussive sounding language. Moreover, our vocal chords are capable of imitating many percussive instruments. For example, have you ever heard somebody beat box before? They are essentially creating a live percussive sound with their voice.

Now, if we dig a little deeper we will realise isolated vocal tracks lend themselves nicely to being sampled. For example, if you cut up a word or two, you will get vastly different effects. Some sounds will be harsh or snare drum sounding and other sounds will be soft or hi-hat sounding. If you mix and match different words and vocal sounds you will in effect create a percussive ensemble you can work with to capture a live drum arrangement.

So, in a sense if you are trying to capture great and original percussion sounds you may want to dig into the possibility of utilizing vocal sounds or effects for this purpose. You will be pleasantly surprised to learn that many major artists in pop and hip hop have also used vocal takes or tracks for percussive sounds. You can also tweak each vocal sound with reverb, delay, pitch, hi-pass filters, low-pass filters, reverse-feedback, and a number of other effect techniques to create wild and unique sounds. The possibilities are endless, but one age old theory in music still holds true. That is, thinking outside the box to achieve maximum results will always benefit you more than doing what has been done before.
