How To Weld A Band Saw Blade

. There is an option, however, rather than to buy a new band saw each time it breaks, to simply weld the saw back together. The band saw is absolutely necessary in the work environment but can become extremely pricey when having to constantly be replaced. Only if the saw is totally devastated may it be beyond repair.

As with any task there are a number of provisions required. You will need a tig welder, a good strong vice, a grinder (the smaller the better), a pair of welding gloves and visor, a degreasing agent. Take care to wear the visor and gloves at all times. Using a welding is a potential hazard and should always be done with extreme caution.

The first thing you should do, before you begin the process of repair, is to assess the damage done to the saw. Try to understand the reason for it's initial break. If the metal is rusted it might make it unrepairable. Rust will make the saw brittle and unable to sustain the process of repair. In any case if you do manage to fix it, a rusty band will break again shortly anyway. Once you are satisfied with the condition of the blade, apply the degreasing solution. Apply it to the broken area, leave for a minute or two and then wipe it off.

The first step involves the vice. When using the vice always be sure that whatever you are working on is firmly secured. If something is loose it may cause injury. Use the grinder on the broken lip of one of the parts of the band. Caress the metal into a shape that will welcome it's counterpart. Do the second similarly. Remember to take your time, there must be a quality fit. Try placing the broken pieces together, if you aren't satisfied simply grind for a bit longer.

At this point take both pieces and place them tightly in the clamp so the the broken ends are well joined. Make sure the saw is situated in the correct position, because it is now that you will begin to weld it together. You can use the tig welder to ensure a strong joint is made. Be sure to spend time with this step. Take a moment to turn the saw over and do the other side, just for the added strength.

After use, both the welder and the metal saw will be hot, and so you should stand back and leave it to cool off. Inspect your work after it has called. Try and find if you missed anything or didn't weld heavily enough in any area. If you are content with your work you can then regrind the metal until it is smooth and fresh looking. After all the work you have done to it, the metal will most likely be soiled with grime; this should be wiped clean.

This is a simple and effective way of saving money. If done well and the saw is taken care of, one blade should last you for a long time. Welding a band saw blade is a handy alternative for any workman.
