How To Write A 'How To' Article
The best way to build a name for yourself in any niche is providing great content, and more importantly solutions. Most internet marketers choose how to' articles as their vehicle to accomplish this. The problem is 75% of the time, the how to article leaves an important step out.
Why does this matter? Well unless you are simply blasting a vague article out there to gain a backlink, you are not providing the reader anything but frustration. If you want to know how to write a great how to article, first you need to remember one important thing. The reader is reading your article because they do not have this piece of knowledge they believe you are about to share with them.
If you do not thoroughly and concisely explain all steps involved, you will stymie the reader's efforts and ultimately frustrate them.
If you are truly writing a how to article that is intended to help someone, first take out a piece of paper. At the top of the paper, write the topic. Let's say for this discussion it is how to install a wordpress blog.
Brainstorm as if you are actually going to explain this to someone who just landed here from Pluto. Include all the tools, resources, and locations of what will be needed to do this.
If you start out by saying "type in Wordpress in the search bar" you would be assuming this person knows what a search bar is. In this case it would be an okay assumption. If the reader doesn't know what a search bar is, they probably don't have the wits to accomplish the task anyway.
However, if you give that instruction and don't specify which Wordpress you are talking about, this would be a huge error on your part. This could easily trip up a new internet marketer.
It is human nature to speak or write as if we are talking to someone with our own knowledge level. Writing a great how to article requires you to include a larger base of people. Remember, these folks are looking to find out how to do something. It is your job to be specific as possible so they can overcome the hurdle in their way.
If you are able to do this, the reader has instant high regard for you since your how to article did what it said it would do. That's not to say other how to articles don't do what they say they intend to do, they just aren't as actionable' as yours because you took the time to take into consideration their lack of this particular knowledge.
This may sound elementary to you, but this is the difference between the reader getting on your list, or someone else's.
P.S. If you create your own information products, you better take heed, or else you will be flooded with calls and/or emails asking for clarification, or worse, their money back!
