The practice of naturopathy worldwide is governed by specific regulations

. The same is true in Toronto. No naturopathic practitioner is allowed to engage in this profession unless he has met the required educational requisites.

A Toronto naturopath doctor must have finished a three year minimum required University education. In addition to this, he or she must have attended the standard pre-medical requirements of a four- year full time course of learning in one of the six North American Colleges on Naturopathic medicine recognized by the government. This training course covers lessons in basic medical sciences, diagnosis and assessment capabilities and techniques in therapy. It must be completed within 4,200 hours of rigid study. After meeting this requirement, another 1,500 hours is required for clinical internship.

It is not sufficed that you have met the above educational qualifications. A licensed naturopathic doctor in Toronto must successfully hurdle a set of standardized North American examinations and another set of provincial licensing examination. The profession is regulated under the Drugless Practitioners Act through the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy-Naturopathy. All practitioners must be fully licensed members of the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors or any local association of naturopathic doctors. There are some guidelines in the practice of Toronto naturopath treatment as specifically spelled out under the said law.

The practitioners in Toronto of naturopathic medicine are organized under the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors (OAND). Presently, it has total memberships of 885 NDs. This naturopath Toronto based association is under the guidance and supervision of the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy-Naturopath that oversees the implementation of the 1925 Drugless Therapy Act. In June 2007, the new Naturopathy Act was finally enacted that will move the supervision of Naturopathic doctors into the existing Regulated Health Professions Act whereby NDs will be coming under one roof with all the other regulated health professionals.

This Naturopathy Act likewise validates the present responsibilities of Naturopathic Doctors to provide the best health care needs of their patients and to render diagnoses with the full ability to perform the regulated acts.

Under this law, he or she must be a registered member of the OAND or else, non-appearance of his or her name on the registry of the association will be treated as prima facie evidence of being a bogus Naturopathic doctor in Ontario.

The penalty for being caught as an unauthorized practitioner of naturopath in Ontario is a fine of not exceeding $25,000 and an imprisonment of not more than three months after being found guilty of the charge. This law is very strict so that even those who are licensed naturopathic doctors can not practice their profession in Ontario if they are not registered members of the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors.
