How True That There Is A Vampire In Your Home?
When we were children, many of us had a bogey man living in our homes
. Now that we are adults, a new monster lurks in our homes, the energy vampire.
As more and more electronic appliances, toys and gadgets are being added to our homes, the amounts of phantom electricity consumed by these products are also on the rise. Even when turned off, these products consume energy and can add considerably to our annual electric bill.
Phantom electricity sucks the energy out of you home as energy vampires. Unlike the bogey man that can be made to go away by turning on a light, energy vampires are totally opposite. You can get rid of them by turning off electrical appliances when not in use.
If any product has a small LED light that stays on all the time, you can be assured that this device is drawing a small amount of electricity even though it is turned off. Those that argue against turning off these products as a waste of time because the electricity draws are so small, are missing the big picture.
Typically one of this energy sucking devices can use from one to five watts in standby mode. At this rate, they would have to be on for anywhere from 200 to 1000 hours to generate one kilowatt hour at a cost of about ten cents. No big deal you say?
Just take a walk around your home and count the appliances that are plugged in. The wall phone, the microwave, the blender, the automatic jar opener, the automatic can opener, the food processor, coffee pot, toaster, toaster oven, cell phones, TV, stereos, Wii, VCR, Blue Ray, clocks, toothbrushes, electric razors, clock radios, printers, scanners, fax machines, caller ID, fans, and the list goes on. Add them all up and you can see that your energy vampire is hard at work stealing your money.
Here are some tips on how to lower you electric bills by reducing phantom electricity.
1. Unplug all small appliances when not in use. Toasters, electric can openers, cell phone chargers, blenders, toothbrushes, electric razors, and other such small appliances.
2. Unplug your television, Wii, PS3, blue ray, VCR, and surround sound equipment when not in use.
3. Do you have an electric clock in an unused guest room? Unplug it until you have guests using the room. Same goes with the small night lights.
4. Turn off your computer at night and unplug it. Computers, even when on standby-consume a lot of energy. Unplugging your computer at night may also lessen your threat from hackers and computer viruses. Printers and scanners that are left plugged in are also guilty of phantom electricity drain. Unplug them when not in use.
5. Even laptops use a large amount of energy when turned off.
Getting into the habit of unplugging unused appliances doesn't take a lot of time but can reap big benefits when it comes to saving money over the course of the year. Getting rid of the energy vampire is very easy when you know how.
