How Useable Is Your Website?
You have a great website, we all know that, and the information or services that you are offering can very well be the best in the entire world
. But, if you are not maintaining a site that is easy to use for people who are visiting, then you might as well lock the doors and close up shop because you are letting money fly out the door. In order for websites to be successful, they all need a few things. First, they need to look good and work well. There is nothing that people hate more than going to a website that has trouble loading or is laid out poorly. Remember that your site is the only visible representation that people will have, and you want it to look and work as good as possible.
The second thing you need to be aware of is how useable your site is for visitors. Do all of the buttons work? Do the links link to the right place? Are the pages loading properly? All of these things should be addressed during the design phase, but even if you make the smallest updates over time, they can interfere with the functionality of your site. These things are usually nothing big to fix, but they do require constant monitoring and testing in order to ensure that your customers and visitors are getting the best experience possible when they are coming to your website.
If you are offering products for sale, how you arrange your catalog, the search menus you offer and your ordering and payment pages should also be considered. Are they all easy to use? Can customers find products and product information easily and with just a couple of mouse clicks? If they do decide to buy something, is your checkout process easy to use and simple to navigate through? These are important things to consider and even if you think you have all of these bases covered, you will not really know how well people are enjoying it unless they complain about things.
The key to having a usable website is to create it to be simple before you even start adding buttons and pictures. Second to simplicity is that information is easy to access and people can get what they want without having to spend a lot of time searching your site. Just remember, even if your site works and there are no glitches, there are things that will need to be tweaked and changed to make it easier and easier for people to enjoy.
Your website is the bread and butter of the products and services that you are going to be selling. How it looks and works is crucial to any success you expect to have, and the easier and more useable it is will have a direct relationship with how much business your site will attract. Give your customers your best, and don't give them an excuse to look elsewhere simply because you have a small glitch that annoys people when they discover it.
