Property experts are fond of telling us that we should concentrate our home improvement efforts on two rooms of the house

. They say that improvements made to the kitchen and the bathroom are likely to add the most value to a property.

So does that mean that we should neglect all other rooms? Doing so could be a mistake in financial terms and it's certainly unlikely to do anything positive when it comes to your overall lifestyle.

The living room is an excellent example of a place in your home that demands attention. This is a room that is probably used on a frequent basis by your family. But it's also a place where you'll be entertaining guests. As such, it's a room that should be about impressing, as well as providing comfort.

How well does your living room perform this task? It's worth trying to take an objective look. If you're worried that it doesn't look especially welcoming then you might want to make some simple improvements. This doesn't necessarily mean spending an enormous amount of money.

There are plenty of cheap changes that you can make. This might range from a new set of curtains, to more dramatic transformations. Have you thought, for instance, about the focal point of the room? For many people, the object that is most likely to be mentioned in this context is a television set.

Since many more people now have large televisions, these appliances do tend to dominate a room. But this doesn't need to be the case. It's always nice if you can attract attention with a rather more pleasant alternative. A good example of this would be to make use of an electric fire suite.

This has the added advantage of providing extra warmth to the room. Having a practical, stylish home accessory can certainly help to transform your living room. It can make it a more comfortable, enjoyable place in which to spend time.

Alternatively, you might think about how new items of furniture could change the look and feel of the room. Be creative and you'll be able to create a much more impressive place to spend time.
