How Well Do Americans Know Themselves?

Fifty-two percent of Americans say it is harder to know what you should eat than it is to do your taxes

. When broken down by gender, 55% of men said knowing what to eat was harder compared to 48% of women. This is according to the International Food Information Council Foundation's 2012 survey of more than 1,000 people. Although 55% of Americans are trying to lose weight, only 14% know how many calories they should eat. Finally, 76% of Americans aren't sure what dieting advice to believe because it changes so often - or because they change their minds.

As many as 24,000 Americans who have never smoked die yearly from lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer in "never smokers" is among the top 10, fatal cancers in the U.S. Four primary, environmental causes have been identified: second-hand smoke, worker exposure to cancer-causing agents (including chemicals and gases), air pollution and radon (a

radioactive gas that can collect inside homes). Lung cancer among never smokers is more common among men until age 60, when it becomes more common among women. In 2012 there are no early-screening methods to find this cancer in non-smokers - no "non-smoke detectors".

Thirty percent of American adults have sleepwalked - most as children. A study published in Neurology surveyed 19,136 Americans ages 18 and older. Of those who'd sleepwalked, 3.6% had at least 1 episode in the past year, 2.6% had 1-12 episodes and 1% had 2 or more episodes monthly. People who sleepwalked at least once a year were likelier to have a family history of sleepwalking. People with sleep apnea or psychiatric disorders had an increased risk, but men and women had an equal risk. However, waking a sleepwalker won't cause brain shock or death - so you can "sleep easy".

Finally, American workers have less vacation time than workers in most other developed countries. However, most American workers don't use all their vacation time. According to a study by Harris Interactive, 57% of working Americans had unused vacation time in 2011 - averaging 11 days or about 70% of their vacation time. The main reason for forgoing vacation was workers thinking they had too much work. Twenty percent couldn't afford to travel and 9% were afraid to take time off in an unstable job market. The U.S. is known as the "no vacation nation" and it seems U.S. workers "earned" us that reputation.
