How Well Do You Know Your Headlights?

Maybe you haven't noticed it yet, but the chances are that you are driving a car with cloudy or yellow headlights

. Not only does it look bad, it has a very negative effect on night time driving by cutting down visibility dramatically. This headlight problem has gotten increasingly worse in recent years because auto manufacturers continue to make vehicles with plastic headlight lenses that, without proper care and maintenance, result in cloudy foggy headlights. Many new vehicles, after only two or three years on the road are actually not putting out the amount of light that they need to in order to be legal. This is a wide spread problem that impacts almost all cars and trucks.

Why do automakers continue to use these plastic headlight lenses? The reason is that it is much cheaper to use the plastic headlight lens. Why do the lenses turn yellow or foggy? Plastic headlights are manufactured with polycarbonate plastic for its tensile strength but it is a very porous plastic, so the manufacturers apply a protective film to the headlight lens. Intense sunlight, heat and humidity combined with the heat of the halogen bulb actually causes the protective film to de-laminate, leaving the lens exposed to the elements. Over time the lens will develop a cloudy, hazy, discolored appearance and this will diminish the headlights ability to project its beam of light at night and during adverse weather conditions. Who would want their family in a vehicle with this dangerous problem?

Fortunately, there is a way to fix this problem and it isn't replacing the headlight lenses with new ones which can be very expensive. You can now purchase a headlight restoration kit that will restore clarity, illumination photometry and optical qualities to ugly, hazy, cloudy, plastic headlights no matter the extent of the damage to the headlight. These headlight restoration kits are more than a headlight cleaner. What a good headlight restoration system will do is remove the damaged plastic and then resurface the lens to a like new appearance restoring clarity, illumination, photometry and optical qualities to the headlight lens with long-lasting protection.

The process of restoring your headlights is now quite simple and can be done without using any power tools. You can also restore both your headlights in under 30 minutes. If you have been driving around with foggy headlights or have noticed that is difficult to see at night, you can do something about it. If you don't think you can are up to the do it yourself project, take your car to a mechanic who offers headlight restoration and get it done there. Having headlights that are in tip top working condition is an extremely important part of driving safely.
