How World War Ii Gave Birth To Jeep Grand Cherokee Parts.

Over the last 65 years Jeep vehicles happen to be the transportation choice of soldiers

, adventurers and nowadays even soccer moms. It's steeped in tradition and it has a rich and noble beginning. The Jeep Cherokee, Liberty and Commander all developed over time from the first Willys utility vehicle which was designed and manufactured for use in World War II.

The first Willys Jeep came into being due to a great need for a reconnaissance vehicle in the U.S Army. It was hand built in less than 50 days, and the design changed the landscape and performance of off road utility vehicles forever. The U.S Army had been looking for a fast and light-weight off road vehicle since World War 1. The demand and need to invent this type of recon vehicle became extremely urgent, when Germany started conquering more and more European countries in the early 1940s. It seemed inevitable that America would have to join the allied forces in this global siege against the Germans.

The army approached several motorcar companies and asked them to produce prototypes that might be able to withstand the tough elements of battle. The chosen automobile manufacturers had only 7 weeks to come up with a working prototype. The federal government had exact specifications which the engineers would need to design the vehicle with. Here are the original specifications given to the designers:

1.The vehicle wasn't allowed to weigh a lot more than 1300 pounds. If you consider that in 2005 the average small car on the road weighed over 3000 pounds, it is not a surprise to find that this was one of the specifications the engineers had probably the most problems with. After much consideration, the Army realised the 1300 pound limit was completely unrealistic and raised it to just over 2100 pounds.

2.The vehicle had to be four-wheel drive. The Terrain in Europe would be extremely unpredictable and incredibly wet in the winter, so it was essential that the vehicle could cope with these possible obstacles.

3.The engine would have to produce more than 100 Nm of torque.

4.Have a wheelbase of only 80 inches.

5.Have ground clearance of at least 6.25 inches.

6.The vehicle was expected to carry a payload of about 600 pounds.

7.The cooling system would have to be effective enough to not overheat, even if the vehicle was operated at a low speed for a long period.

It is amazing to consider that with even these tough guidelines, engineers were able to create a working prototype. Even though there were initially some minor issues with engine, a collaborated effort between a few motor companies produced the first Willys Jeep.

The Jeep brand name is today owned by Chrysler. There is an array of models which have evolved from the first Jeep in 1940.
