How Your Doctor Can Help You Quit Smoking
We go to the doctor for all our aches and pains
, and take medications as prescribed, for any number of ailments. Then doesn't it make sense to go to our health care professional to find out what the latest weapons are in the war against tobacco craving?
There is the tobacco patch, which is worn on the skin and is supposed to curb your craving for nicotine. For some it has worked, but we all know of a dyed-in-the-wool smoker who gets the patch only to light up while wearing it, which not only defeats the purpose but can cause medical problems.
You and your doctor should have a serious talk about smoking and its effects on the physical body, meaning your body in particular. If you have an underlying condition such as heart problems, high blood pressure or some other potentially dangerous illness, all this should be taken into consideration as you and your doctor talk.
If you are given the green light to embark on a no-smoking plan you must stick to the orders given. And remember that smoking increases the likelihood of getting several kinds of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Is it really worth the risk?
So your doctor has just given you a prescription for a pill that will help you over the rough times. You can also help by doing the following when the urge to smoke overcomes you:
Get some cinnamon or mint toothpicks
Drink only decaf until a few months have passed
Have a cup of tea
Dust the house
Wash the car
Read an engrossing book
Play the piano or another musical instrument
Brush your teeth
Take a piece of clothing out of the cupboard and smell it. UGH!
Have a herbal tea whenever you crave a coffee
These are only a few things you can do along with your doctor's prescription. Make it a game to see how many other ways you can come up with to keep yourself away from temptation's door.
You are getting professional help now, so stop in periodically to see your doctor and assess how you are doing. Get your blood pressure checked, your heart and lungs listened to, and anything else that seems necessary. It won't be long before you are telling other people how to quit smoking, and saying, "If I could do it, so can you."
Start Quit Smoking today and enjoy your new life with better health and without "smoke"! What are you waiting for?!
