How Your Hockey Clubs Can Make The Most Of A Practice Session

Hockey is one of the most exciting sports in the world to watch and also to participate in

. Millions of kids all across the world participate in hockey clubs to enjoy the thrill of this fast paced game. Hockey is a game that is aggressive and requires a lot of technical skill in order to be good at. Players must be able to glide gracefully across the ice while remaining aggressive to move the puck into the opposing teams goal. Coaching a hockey team full of kids is probably one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges you will ever face. Here are a few pointers to help you make sure that you get the most out of the practice times you have with your team.

One of the mistakes that coaches of hockey clubs make often is assuming that the young players on their team are all great skaters. Skating is a skill that takes a lot of time to master and is something that needs to be refreshed on a regular basis. This means that every practice you hold should spend a few minutes focusing on this skill. Include regular drills designed to build up a players skating ability. Also hold clinics in the off season for new kids joining your team in the fall to learn the skill and have a good grasp on it before season starts.

Make sure that the practice sessions for each of the hockey clubs you coach are well organized. You will only have the kids on your team for a few hours a week. This means that every moment of your practice time is precious. You want to make sure you do not waste a second. Have each minute of practice mapped out beforehand. This plan should also include break times. Use break times to teach principles of the game or share examples of how to effectively use a new skill from a recent game or game you played in at one time. This will ensure that your players get the most from each session.

While learning new techniques is critical to the growth of the players on all the hockey clubs you coach during your life, you need to make sure you stress fundamentals like basic stick handling and passing. Make sure you make regular use of drills that are designed to improve these skills, as fundamentals are what your players will rely on during the heat of the game when nothing goes according to plan.
