How can I control my Asthma?

How can I control my Asthma?

n Canada alone, about 3 million people have asthma. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airway and its symptoms don't manifest in any set patterns. To further complicate things, the severity and duration of each episode can vary greatly from person to person, and from episode to episode. An asthma episode can include shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, coughing, and wheezing.

There is currently no cure for asthma but there are 4 things that can help you live symptom-free:

1. Avoid asthma triggers: Inflammatory triggers include dust mites, animals, cockroaches, moulds, pollens, viral infections, and some air pollutants. Other triggers include smoke, exercise, cold air, fumes for strong smells, food additives including sulphites, and intense emotions. By avoiding these triggers you can lessen or eliminate asthmatic episodes. 2. Take your prescribed medications: Your doctor can prescribe medication to help prevent symptoms before they occur or alleviate symptoms as they occur. Since everyone is different, it may take time for your doctor to find the ideal dosage and combination of medication for you. "Preventer" medication will help you control symptoms before they occur. It's important that even when your symptoms are controlled, you continue taking your medication. Relievers like inhalers, are used when symptoms appear and are meant to immediately alleviate the symptom(s). 3. Learn more about the disease: New medicines and information is being discovered all the time about asthma. Talk to your doctor or a certified asthma educator about what's new and how you can better control your symptoms. 4. Create an asthma action plan: Since asthma symptoms are so different for each person, what works for one person may not work for someone else. Develop an asthma action plan with your doctor and monitor your symptoms until you have a workable plan that matches your lifestyle and symptoms.

Of the three million people in Canada with asthma, six out of ten of them are not in control of the disease. These people have an increased risk of a life-threatening asthma attack or permanent lung damage. Five hundred Canadians die each year from asthma related causes.

Both "preventer" asthma medications and relievers like inhalers are available from online Canadian pharmacies and are often much cheaper than from brick-and-mortar pharmacies.
