For over 10 years ive worked in recording and audio production. I am the head engineer and owner of my own recording, mixing and mastering facility in New York. I look back at the days when I was just starting out, when audio production almost seemed like a dark art. I would constantly ask myself "How do engineers get songs to sound so good?". For those who aren't involved in audio production its something you probably never bother to think about. Just like watching a movie you're there to enjoy the experience not break down the art and technique that went into the production. For those who are involved well... well you very much understand how difficult of a process it is to make a song sound as big and polished as what we're used to hearing.

In the world of audio production there are usually two types of engineers. Those who want to record and those who want to mix. Some like to do both but most prefer one or the other. I am definitely the ladder. I hated my early days in recording. Sitting in a dark studio for hours on end. Going over take after take that all seemed to sound exactly the same to me. Artists indulging in every piece of their creativity while I sit there board and aggravated. Needless to say it wasn't a glamorous experience for me. I got into audio production not to sit around while someone else was being creative, I got into it to be creative myself, to put my stamp on the song. This is what lead me to the love of mixing.

I spent years at a time learning everything I possibly could about mixing. I'd read books on mixing, visit seminars held through the worlds best mix engineers. I'd mix songs free of charge simply to have more experience. It had been a difficult road. The training curve is extremely steep. The different options are years feeling like you have got no better. Its an enormous amount of effort and small victories. The mix engineers who understand how to are actually excellent sounding records are often very highly guarded about their techniques. Maybe now and then you may squeeze some advice or perhaps a secret from them, but usually they're extremely tight lipped about this. Finally after almost ten years I will now lookup and find out that ive learned the skill of mixing. Im some of those pro's you never know the tricks and secrets.
