One of the most annoying things that you can find is the dreaded spyware message that pops up on the computer. To understand how it got there, you need to understand a little about what it is.

Spyware can come in many forms, but it all does very similar things. It will sit in your computer keeping track of what you are doing and many times even stealing passwords or e-mail lists and passing them on to another computer.

People often think that they are somewhat immune to spyware because they don't frequent web sites that you would normally think were unsafe. These typically include adult sites where most people think they become infected with these things.

The truth is that spyware can come from any site. People click on a link in a blog to see something that they think is related to that article. What they later find is that the link is not to information, but rather to a spyware program. If you have children and they are on line, you can be fairly sure that many of the sites that they visit have some form of tracking cookie or some other form of spyware on it.

One of the best ways that you can protect yourself is to limit what you are doing on line. That, however, is impractical for most people because the internet has so many links to it that before you realize it, you can be in an infected location. The sad thing is that once you hit the site, it is almost impossible to close that window without getting an infection.

If you are well versed in computers, you can take the first step and make your firewall a little more difficult to breach. This is not going to stop it all, but it will be a great first line of defense for your computer.

The next important thing that you need to do is to install some form of anti-spyware software. The one caveat here is that you need to get your software from a respected company. That is because a lot of companies on the internet sell or give away software that is designed to combat spyware. The problem is that a good many of them are actually, yes you guessed it, spyware. Take the time to research spyware removal software before purchasing it or running any scans.

The moral here is that you will likely become infected with spyware at some point if you are on line. The best that you can do is offer several layers of defense as mentioned above and to practice safe web surfing.
