Costume design is integral to the overall impact and atmosphere of a film production. Costume designers begin working on films at the beginning of pre-production, collaborating with the director right from the beginning. They work closely with the make-up and set designers to create the final "look" of a production. The costumes are designed to reflect not only the period of the film but also the characters' emotional journeys. This is achieved on a number of levels; some of which only register subconsciously, such as variations in the intensity and depth of colours; and subtly influences our emotional response to the final production.

The importance of the role of costume designers is recognised by various creative awarding bodies such as the Academy Awards. Costume designer Sandy Powell now has more Oscars than Marlon Brando, Meryl Streep and Robert de Niro (three to their two). She won "Best Costume Design" at this year's awards for her "The Young Victoria" costumes, having already won a BAFTA and Costume designer's Guild award for the film. Her other Academy Awards for Best Costume Design were for her work on "Aviator" and "Shakespeare in Love".

Hollywood creativity has long been a driving factor of commerce with big money to be made from merchandising. A successful film can make as much money on merchandising as it does from the box office. This reflects the power these productions have on our imaginations and the fancy dress industry is well placed to exploit this.

Those in the fancy dress industry take advantage of the work of these designers and copy their designs because they know that people will now expect particular characters to look a particular way (think of Snow White). Film industry designers such as Sandy Powell research costume styles, fabrics and fit appropriate for particular time periods, then interpret them to make them look attractive to modern eyes. Our ideas about what people wore in the past are heavily influenced by these designer's interpretations.

Actors acknowledge the contribution a costume makes to their performance, enabling them to enter fully into the role, which is what fancy dress does for us. It gives us the opportunity to step outside of our everyday existence and into a character. Some fans become so involved with films that they will hold conventions to share their passions, often dressing as their favourite character. For the rest of us films can serve as inspiration for "themed" parties; James Bond, Harry Potter and many others. When a new film comes out with a strong costume element such as Tim Burton's recent "Alice in Wonderland", fancy dress suppliers make sure they can meet demand for the new look or flavour of the month.

Hollywood has played a big part, both in creating the characters we want to pretend to be and in creating a demand for convincing copies of movie costumes to fulfil this desire, right down to the exact type of sword or ray gun required to complete our ideal costume; and fancy dress companies are happy to oblige.
