Cosmetic eye surgery can refer to eye bag removal or surgery on the upper or lower eyelids to remove excess skin and permanently tighten the muscles to achieve a firmer and more youthful look. These procedures are fairly simple and straightforward when performed by qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeons who are registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The surgery will usually taken between one and three hours and most patients will therefore we treated as day cases and will be able to resume normal daily activities and return to work after about a week.

When performing surgery on the upper eye lid, the surgeon will make a short incision along the natural crease of the eye lid. They will then separate the skin from the fatty tissue underneath, remove any excess fat and tighten and trim the loose skin before stitching it back into place using small sutures or surgical glue. The stitches will usually be removed after three to seven days, depending on your recovery, and the initial pink scarring will fade very quickly and be barely noticeable.

Surgery on the lower lids is similar, only the surgeon will make incisions close to the eyelashes and outwards into the 'crow's feet'. He or she will then lift and tighten the skin, removing the excess skin that can create wrinkles and tired looking eyes, before securing with very small sutures. Both surgical procedures will result in localised bruising and swelling but these should fade within a week and the results will then be noticeable but natural-looking. The latter procedure is also sometimes known as eye bag removal or blepharoplasty.

Many patients choose to combine the cosmetic surgery procedures and non-surgical treatments they have, to shorten the recovery time and to achieve their desired look without having to visit the clinic too many times.
